From retailers like Sam’s Club and GameStop to individual companies like Sonos and Google, we’ve rounded up all the sales worth looking at, whether you’re hunting for a new smart home hub or just looking to snipe a quick bargain.
As retail workers will note, some of the very best deals are insider deals. If your company is selling off some of its products for cheap or if you work in retail and can apply an employee discount on top of a Black Friday discount, that’s the icing on the cake. For the rest of us, however, here are some general tips for winning at Black Friday.
Be aware of prices and fine printA common way retailers get you is by saying there are “deals” when there really aren’t. This leaves you, compelled by the spirit of good spending, to decide to buy everything you see for fear the discount will disappear. A good rule of thumb is to keep a running list of products you need, like a smart speaker or a new monitor, and then note their manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) and their actual usual prices. Then, compare them to what the prices are now during Black Friday weekend, or even from last year’s Black Friday sales for similar models.
Beware of retailers that suddenly boast the MSRP of certain products. The keyword of that acronym is “suggested,” meaning most times, things like TVs and headphones are never actually sold at the exact MSRP and often priced for less. Ads will often say something is significantly marked down, but if a 4K smart TV is now $1,000, marked down from a $2,000 suggested retail price, and it’s usually sold elsewhere at $1,020 any other time of year, then that’s not a huge bargain. That’s just business as usual.
To reiterate: just because something is advertised at 70 percent off MSRP, that doesn’t mean it’s cheaper than it has been year round. Do your research to know what’s a good deal and what isn’t. And if you’re super concerned about overspending, bring cash to the brick-and-mortar stores so you’re limited to buying just what you came for.
Know what won’t go on sale
Newer products like the new 2018 MacBook Air and Red Dead Redemption 2 most likely won’t get massive discounts during Black Friday. That’s to be expected; these are relatively new items for Apple and Rockstar Games, and both companies are relying on them to sell like hotcakes even at full retail. Case in point, the best deal we’ve seen for the new MacBook Air was a $100 discount offered by eBay. And as of this reporting, we haven’t seen any deals for products like the iPhone XS Max worth writing about. Carriers that are offering convoluted trade-in deals for the latest iPhone should be eyed with caution. Trust your gut. Read everything twice.

YouTube has restored several videos showing a women's rights campaigner being killed in a variety of ways in the video game Red Dead Redemption 2.
The platform had deleted the recordings on Wednesday and in one case had banned the clip creator involved.
The action had represented its first such response to depictions of graphic violence within a mainstream game.
But it now says that it made a "mistake" and has restricted the clips so they cannot be seen by under-18s.
MisinterpretationThe U-turn occurred after a backlash on social media.
This included the vlogger PewDiePie retweeting a complaint by one of the video creators, who had accused YouTube of unfair treatment.
Another popular vlogger, Keem, had also drawn attention to the affair claiming it was "going to create GamerGate 2.0".
Ryan Wyatt, YouTube's head of gaming, eventually responded - blaming the deletions on a misinterpretation of YouTube's community guidelines.
"The reviewer will be educated on this outcome and on how to avoid repeating this mistake," he tweeted..
However, the BBC understands the original decision had involved several members of YouTube's staff and that the original ruling was overturned once the business's wider gaming team took charge.
"YouTube's community guidelines prohibit among other things, gratuitous violence, nudity, dangerous and illegal activities, and hate speech," a spokeswoman said.
"Creative formats such as video games can be challenging to assess but when content crosses the line and is flagged to our attention, we take action as necessary."

We’ve known for a long time that dark mode / night mode apps can prolong battery life on smartphones with OLED screens. It’s true on Android, and it’s true with the iPhone. Fortunately, the company seems to recognize the value of dark mode. YouTube and Android Messages already have it, and Google is also bringing the feature to its Phone app and testing it in the mobile Google Feed. Android can also be set to a dark theme for the quick settings pull down and app drawer, but Google hasn’t yet gone as far as adding a system-wide night mode. (That’s something Samsung plans to do with its new One UI.)
As an example of dark mode coming to your battery’s rescue, just look at the huge difference below, where the Pixel is set to 100 percent brightness. The power savings of dark mode are evident. I tend to stick to the traditional look of these apps most often, as I find white text on black a little harsh on my eyes, but it’s nice to see that Google is recognizing the value of easing up on all the white. Make it a choice wherever it makes sense.

Samsung is actually using two separate displays to create its foldable phone — one on the inside, and a smaller display on the outside — unlike Royole’s FlexPai, which uses a single folding display on the outside of the device. Samsung’s internal display is 7.3 inches with a 1536 x 2152 resolution (4.2:3). It folds in half to reveal a second display on the front of the device. This second “cover display,” as Samsung calls it, functions as a 4.58-inch phone interface with a resolution of 840 x 1960 (21:9). It’s also flanked by much larger bezels at the top and bottom compared to the internal display. Although it looks very stocky, Samsung says the device hiding inside the disguise is actually “stunning.”
